Elders

The Importance of Elders

Elders are highly respected in our communities as knowledge keepers, community supports and teachers. It is important to note, while all seniors are respected as people who may need extra care and attention, Elders (big-E) are gifted special honour for their service to their communities and as knowledge keepers. It is customary to have Elders offer prayers, open and close ceremonies, and provide teachings and knowledge (sometimes they may also be able to share in the Michif language).

The Kelowna Metis Elders Advisory Council

The Kelowna Métis Elders Advisory Council (KMEAC) can be called on to provide support and expertise in many areas for the KMA and the Métis Community Services Society of BC. This may also include roles as cultural advisors by sharing their knowledge and cultural teachings at community activities, workshops, ceremonies or other events in the community.

As of 2020, the KMEAC has seven members who meet monthly. The council’s goals are focused on working for the benefit of Métis children and families, and is currently working internally to re-align their energies to best do this moving forward.

For more information, the KMEAC Chair may be contacted by email through the KMA office.
